Muslims offer a special collective prayer for a dead person. This prayer is called Namaz-e-Janaza (Salat al-Janazah). It is an integral part of the Islamic funeral rites. In this holy gathering Muslims gather together to seek forgiveness and mercy for the dead and all other Muslims who have passed away.
Salat al-Janazah is a collective obligation (Fard al-Kifaya) This means that if a few people from the Muslim community take the responsibility to perform the prayer, the burden is removed from the whole community. But if none does so and the prayer is dropped, then the whole community is held responsible in the eyes of Allah.

Those praying should ideally stand in an odd number of rows with an Imam standing in front facing the Qiblah. The body of the dead person is positioned directly in front of the Imam. If there are several dead bodies, they should be placed one in front of the other.
The prayer starts with the silent recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha. The prayer then goes on to ask for Allah’s mercy, justice and grace on the dead. This prayer also has special duas. It is worth remembering that the Janazah prayer does not contain Ruku (bowing) or Sujood (prostration).
The following is the step-by-step method of performing the salat according to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions:

2. After that, you must read Takbeer and Durood-e-Ibrahimi.

3. A dua is said for the deceased after the third Takbir has been performed.

4. A fourth Takbir is then read, followed by the last taslim to one side, following a little pause.

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him peace, excuse him, elevate his station, broaden his entrance, wash him with water, snow and ice, purify him from his sins as a white garment is purified of dirt, and give him a better home than his home, a better family than his family, a better spouse than his spouse, and admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of Hell.

O Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, remove his sorrow and heal his grief, for You are the Healer, and there is no cure except Your cure, a cure that leaves no sickness behind.

O Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, remove her sorrow and heal her grief, for You are the Healer, and there is no cure except Your cure, a cure that leaves no sickness behind.
