About Surah Al-Ikhlas

The Arabic name of Surah Al-Ikhlas is الإخلاص. Al-Ikhlas means “Sincerity” or “Purity of Faith”. Unusually, the word does not appear in the surah; the name reflects its subject, pure Tawhid. quran.com lists it as Makki; the notes explain that scholars differ because of different reports about the occasion of its revelation. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 22 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Masad and before Surah Al-Falaq.

Main Themes of Surah Al-Ikhlas

The surah states the doctrine of Tawhid in four brief sentences that are easy to memorise.

• Allah is One, the Eternal Refuge on whom all depend.
• He neither begets nor was begotten, and nothing is comparable to Him.
• It answers the many mistaken ideas about God common at the time, such as gods with bodies, families or human needs.
• The notes record many narrations in which the Prophet described it as equal to a third of the Quran, and explain this as meaning it covers Tawhid, one of the Quran’s three core teachings.
