About Surah Qadr
The Arabic name of Surah Qadr is القدر, also written Al-Qadr. Qadr means “decree” and also “honour” or “value”. The name comes from the first verse, which mentions Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree. Scholars differ on whether it is Makki or Madani; quran.com lists it as Makki. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 25 of 114. It is found in Juz 30. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-’Alaq and before Surah Al-Bayyinah.
Main Themes of Surah Qadr
The surah explains why the Quran deserves the highest respect by describing the night in which it was revealed.
- Placed right after Surah Al-’Alaq, whose first verses began the revelation, it explains that the Quran was sent down on a night of destiny.
- The quran.com notes give two meanings for that night: a night when destinies are decided, and a night of unique honour and dignity.
- Allah stresses that He sent the Quran down Himself, so its message comes with His authority rather than any human origin.
- The angels and the Spirit descend that night by Allah’s permission, and it remains peace until the break of dawn.
