About Surah At-Tahrim
The Arabic name of Surah At-Tahrim is التحريم. At-Tahrim means “The Prohibition”. The name refers to the opening verse, which asks why the Prophet had made unlawful for himself something Allah had made lawful. It was revealed in Madinah, so it is counted among the Madani surahs. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 107 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah At-Talaq and before Surah Al-Mulk.

Through incidents in the Prophet’s household, the surah clarifies important principles about lawful and unlawful matters and the example of the Prophet.
- The authority to declare things lawful or unlawful belongs to Allah alone; not even the Prophet may forbid on his own what Allah has permitted.
- Because a Prophet’s actions become an example for others, Allah corrected even a minor matter promptly so that His law would reach people in its pure form.
- This gives confidence that the Prophet’s practice, wherever no correction was recorded, is in harmony with Allah’s will.
