The Arabic name of Surah Al-Qamar is القمر. Al-Qamar means “The Moon”. The name comes from the first verse, which mentions the splitting of the moon. It belongs to the Makki surahs, the chapters revealed in Makkah before the Hijrah. The notes date it to about five years before the Hijrah, when the splitting of the moon was witnessed at Mina. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 37 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah An-Najm and before Surah Ar-Rahman.
