About Surah Al-Fajr
The Arabic name of Surah Al-Fajr is الفجر. Al-Fajr means “The Dawn”. The surah opens with an oath by the dawn. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet’s migration to Madinah. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 10 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Ghashiyah and before Surah Al-Balad.
Main Themes of Surah Al-Fajr
The surah affirms reward and punishment in the Hereafter and criticises the values of a materialistic society.
- The surah swears by the dawn, ten nights, the even and the odd, and the night as it passes: signs of the regular order Allah has set in the universe.
- The fall of Ad, Thamud and Pharaoh shows that the world is governed by a wise Ruler who holds people to account.
- A critique of materialism: wealth is not a reward and poverty is not a punishment; Allah tests people in both conditions.
- A rebuke of a society that left orphans destitute, ignored the poor and seized inheritances, with a reminder that reward and punishment in the Hereafter are certain.
