The Arabic name of Surah At-Takasur is التكاثر, also written At-Takathur. At-Takathur means “Competing for More” (quran.com: “The Rivalry in World Increase”). The name comes from the first verse. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet’s migration to Madinah. Commentators generally regard it as Makki, though a few reports link it to Madinah. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 16 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Qari’ah and before Surah Al-’Asr.
The surah warns against a life spent competing for worldly gain and reminds people that every blessing is a trust.
