The Arabic name of Surah Al-'Asr is العصر. Al-’Asr means “Time” or “The Declining Day” (the late afternoon). The surah opens with an oath by it. It was revealed in Makkah, so it is counted among the Makki surahs. Most commentators regard it as Makki and from the earliest stage of revelation. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 13 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah At-Takathur and before Surah Al-Humazah.
In three short verses, Al-’Asr sets out what separates success from loss in human life.
