The Arabic name of Surah Al-Maoon is الماعون, also written Al-Ma’un. Al-Ma’un means “Small Kindnesses”, the simple help people give one another. The word appears at the end of the last verse. quran.com lists it as Makki, but the notes record differing views, and their author sees signs that part of it was revealed in Madinah. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 17 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Quraysh and before Surah Al-Kawthar.
The surah shows how belief in the Hereafter, or the lack of it, shapes a person’s character and the way they treat others.
