About Surah Al-Feel
The Arabic name of Surah Al-Feel is الفيل, also written Al-Fil. Al-Fil means “The Elephant”. It is named after the people of the elephant mentioned in the first verse. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet’s migration to Madinah. It is unanimously Makki and was probably revealed at a very early stage. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 19 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Humazah and before Surah Quraysh.
Main Themes of Surah Al-Feel
The surah refers briefly to a well-known event in the history of Makkah, the attack on the Ka’bah, and draws a clear lesson from it.
- A brief reminder of the army with elephants that came against the Ka’bah and was destroyed by Allah.
- The event was recent and well known in Makkah, so a short reference was enough.
- The Arabs acknowledged that Allah alone, not their idols, had protected the Ka’bah.
- The lesson for Quraysh: worship Allah alone, and know that opposing His message by force invites His punishment.
