About Surah At-Tariq
The Arabic name of Surah At-Tariq is الطارق. At-Tariq means “The Night Visitor” (quran.com: “The Nightcomer”), referring to the bright star named in the opening verses. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet’s migration to Madinah. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 36 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Buruj and before Surah Al-A’la.
Main Themes of Surah At-Tariq
The surah addresses two themes: every person must return to Allah, and no plot can defeat the Quran.
- Nothing in the universe exists without a guardian over it, as the stars of the sky bear witness.
- The One who created the human being from a drop of fluid is able to bring him back, when every hidden secret will be examined.
- The Quran is a decisive word, not a jest, as serious and real as rain falling and plants growing from the earth.
- The schemes of those who oppose the Quran will fail, and the Prophet is told to be patient for a while.
