About Surah As-Saf
The Arabic name of Surah As-Saf is الصف. As-Saf means “The Ranks”. The name comes from verse 4, which praises those who strive in Allah’s cause standing in ranks like a solid structure. It was revealed in Madinah, so it is counted among the Madani surahs. The notes suggest it was probably revealed soon after the Battle of Uhud. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 109 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Mumtahanah and before Surah Al-Jumu’ah.
Main Themes of Surah As-Saf
The surah urges believers to make their faith sincere and to stand firm in Allah’s cause.
- A call to sincerity in faith: Allah dislikes those who say one thing and do another.
- A warning not to treat the Messenger the way some of the Children of Israel treated Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them).
- An assurance that efforts to put out Allah’s light will fail and that His religion will prevail.
- The way to success in this life and the next: sincere belief in Allah and His Messenger, and striving in His way with oneself and one’s wealth.
