The Arabic name of Surah Muhammad is محمد. This surah is named after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose name appears in verse 2. It is also known as Al-Qital, meaning “Fighting”. It belongs to the Madani surahs, the chapters revealed in Madinah after the Hijrah. The notes date it to Madinah, after fighting had been permitted but before any battle had actually taken place. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 95 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Ahqaf and before Surah Al-Fath.
Its central concern is the conflict between truth and falsehood in Madinah, and how that conflict tested the sincerity of everyone who professed faith.
