The Arabic name of Surah Al-Balad is البلد. Al-Balad means “The City”, referring to Makkah. The name comes from the first verse. It is a Makki surah, revealed in Makkah before the Prophet’s migration to Madinah. The notes place it at a time when the Makkan leaders had resolved to oppose the Prophet and allowed themselves to mistreat him. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 35 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-Fajr and before Surah Ash-Shams.
In a few short verses, the surah explains the human being’s position in the world and the choice he must make.
