The Arabic name of Surah Al-Ghashiyah is الغاشية. Al-Ghashiyah means “The Overwhelming Event”, a name for the Day of Resurrection. It comes from the first verse. It belongs to the Makki surahs, the chapters revealed in Makkah before the Hijrah. It was revealed early, when the Prophet had begun preaching publicly and many in Makkah were listening carelessly. In the revelation-order list used by quran.com, it is number 68 of 114. In the order of the Mushaf it comes after Surah Al-A’la and before Surah Al-Fajr.
The surah calls people to reflect on Tawhid and the Hereafter, the two points the early Makkan message focused on.
